Thermal Protection Across Every Orbit: Aviotec and Dunmore Deliver Precision and Durability
From Low Earth Orbit to deep space, Aviotec’s work spans the full spectrum of orbital environments. Their heritage includes scientific and Earth observation satellites, lunar exploration missions, interplanetary probes, commercial NewSpace platforms, and institutional programmes for the European Space Agency. Based in Italy, Aviotec has also supported missions connected to the International Space Station, where durability and precision are essential.

At the core of these spacecraft are Aviotec’s Multi-Layer Insulation (MLI) blankets—custom-engineered thermal control systems designed to protect spacecraft structures and sensitive payloads from extreme temperature fluctuations, radiation, and Atomic Oxygen (ATOX) exposure.
Each mission requires a tailored configuration. Layups and material selections vary depending on orbital regime—LEO, MEO, GEO, or interplanetary trajectory—and the environmental challenges associated with each. Once launched, these spacecraft must operate flawlessly for years, often decades. There is no room for compromise.
The Partnership with Dunmore
To meet these standards, Aviotec relies on advanced materials sourced from Dunmore for the production of its MLI blankets. Aviotec’s relationship with Dunmore began through a recommendation from a large system integrator. Over time, the collaboration evolved into a trusted partnership built on responsiveness and flexibility.
Aviotec has purchased essentially the full range of Dunmore’s space products. Procurement is coordinated through Aero Team S.r.l. in Turin, with shipments delivered directly from Dunmore’s production facilities to Aviotec’s plant.
What sets the partnership apart is not only product quality—but support.
“It’s easy to be cooperative when everything runs smoothly,” said Riccardo Barresi, Project Manager at Aviotec. “True partners are proven when difficulties arise. Dunmore has consistently provided strong technical and commercial support, reinforcing trust and continuity across our programmes.”

Support When It Matters: Material Discontinuation
Several years ago, a material widely used for its Atomic Oxygen resistance properties was discontinued. Such a change can significantly impact spacecraft design and qualification cycles.
Dunmore worked closely with Aviotec to identify and implement an alternative material. The replacement has been successfully used ever since—without disruption to mission timelines or performance. “Dunmore supported us in selecting an alternative solution that we continue to use successfully today,” he added.
For Aviotec, choosing a thermal solutions partner goes beyond price or availability. It means selecting and working with a company capable of delivering technical expertise, commercial agility, and logistical reliability—especially under the demanding constraints of ESA-compliant programmes and international missions.
Dunmore’s materials consistently meet the demanding standards of space applications. More importantly, the company’s availability, flexibility, and after-sales collaboration have strengthened the relationship over time. Barresi adds, “In an industry where reliability is everything, Dunmore has proven to be a true partner.”
